2009 Running Events (Updated Feb 2009)

An upated from my 23 Jan 09 post:

My tentative events(@22 Feb 09):

01/03/09: Newton Active Run 2009 [10km] Confirmed

24/05/09: Cold Storage Kids Run

16/08/09: AHM/Singapore Bay Run [10km/21km: TBD]

13/09/09: Mizuno Wave Run [10km]

18/10/09: NB Real Run [10km/15km TBD]

01/11/09: Ge Women's 10km

06/12/09: SCSM 09 [10km]

As it stands, 5(4) compared to 9 events in 2008 is a major decrease. In 5 months from Aug ~ Dec 07 in my first year, I had 5 run events liao. We'll see how it goes. Recession means got to be prudent.

I do have one eye on 1 overseas event: SC KL Marathon (28/06/09) or Borneo Marathon (11/10/09) or Jakarta 10k Marathon (26/07/09) all 10km since there's no way I can do 21km in 2.5hrs, that is if I can complete 21km in the first place.

6th 2009 Run

Goodness, a slow start and only the 6th run of the year.

Met 3 of my colleagues at 6:35pm going to UOB for the i-Run. Mr WWScan do 5km in 33mins (or did he change and then said 37mins?). Wow, all are speedsters.

Anyway, got my run going after I reached home. I ran my 1km just before the Sengkang CC at a pretty fast pace. Definitely <8min/km pace. Then I decided to check out part of the Active Run route by running straight over the river to connect to Sengkang West Way, following the LRT route. Saw a few runners in opposite direction. It's weird running a route and not knowing how fast one is going since no idea where is 2km, 3km and 4km mark. I ran on. Walked on Sengkang West Way. It was tough going, crossing the 2nd bridge over the river on Sengkang West Way. Since I had to buy some groceries from Cold Storage, decided to keep going on till Compass Heights. Met Kelvin who was bringing some for TKD class at Sengkang CC. He shouted out "Training hard huh?" with a big grin......I knew I should have continued my run on the opposite side of Sengkang East Way. (Sigh)

According to MapMyRun, the route is around 5.3km. Completed in 38mins:30secs 7.16mins/km average pace or speed of 8.26km/hr according to the auto-calculate function.

Since I am not even close to running 10km this year, I wonder how I will fare trying to complete the 10km Newton Active Run next Sunday, 1 March...............

5th 2009 Run (Valentine's Day Run)

Ha ha. Probably the first time I ran on Valentine's Day. Actually I woke up at 6am+ but felt terrible. Runny nose, the sky was hazy. I was like wondering if I would be breathing more of the haze if I ran.

After delaying for more than an hour, I did go. 5km + 2km addition for 7km. The last 2-3km was really laborious and I am really wondering if I can complete the 10km Active Run on 1 March 2009.

7km: 55mins 33 secs. 7.9 or 8mins per km average.

4th 2009 Run

I decided to run my normal 5km route anti-clockwise. It was okay though I think I tried to run to fast almost from 'go'.

Anyway, I finished the 5km loop in 37min 30secs, avg pace of 7min 30secs per km. What is good and bad is my average 5km pace this year has been getting faster which is not necessary good. My right knee again didn't feel that great. So, I should have controlled my pace a bit more.

3rd 2009 run

3rd run of the year. Woke up before 6am but head so heavy. But was thinking I don't run this morning, I might not run on Sunday morning.

After doing my daily Bible reading, I 'nua' a bit more until almost 7:30am. Feeling more awake, I decided to change and grab my shoes. Was in no mood to stretch and also what stretching did to my right knee was at the back of my mind.

I was quite happy to clock almost 4km without stopping. Tired but bearable. I finished my 5km in 35:20 (7min 4sec/km pace) which was fast, fast pace for me. Nearing my 5km mark, I was debating to continue another km or not. At the end, decided to extend by doing the 1km loop in front of my place. All in 6km, was 46min, a 7min40sec pace. I was really exhausted as the last km included 400m +/- of walking. After that, was breakfast.

I saw sgRunners' IMD on the Newton Active Run posters along the NAR route. Many posters of IMD. :)

2nd 2009 run

I think I overstretched at home before I started my run. The moment I started my slow jog, I felt the back of my right thigh very tight and also my right knee was not comfortable. Anyway, I decided to persevere on with the discomfort and slight pain.

Did my 5km in 38min 5secs. A 7min 37sec per km pace. Much faster than I expected since I was targeting 8min/km pace. I tried too hard in the last 2km even though I was exhausted and breathing heavily and tired before 3km mark. Fitness level really needs work and I now have less than 1 month before the Newton Active Run 10km. I don't think home ground will be any advantage for me in this case :)

1st 2009 run

Decided to have my first run today. I had always wanted to hold off till end Feb or even March 2009. But with the Newton Active Run 10km on 1 March, I figure I better start sooner rather than later.

3:07km in 24min: 45 secs. 8min 4sec per km. Not fast. But I was feeling the strain within the 1st km. Need time to build up my fitness level.

Look at the Son

“Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.”Hebrews 12:1-2 NKJV

More mornings than not I drag myself out of bed and onto the street…I run because I don’t like cardiologists.

Since heart disease runs in our family, I run in our neighborhood. As the sun is rising, I am running. And as I am running, my body is groaning. It doesn’t want to cooperate. My knee hurts.
My hip is stiff. My ankles complain…

Things hurt. And as things hurt, I’ve learned I have three options. Go home. (Denalyn would laugh at me.) Meditate on my hurts until I start imagining I’m having chest pains. (Pleasant thought.) Or I can keep running and watch the sun come up…If I watch God’s world go from dark to golden, guess what? The same happens to my attitude. The pain passes and the joints loosen…Everything improves as I fix my eyes on the sun.

Wasn’t that the counsel of the Hebrew epistle—“looking unto Jesus?”

Probable 2009 Run events

I think I will do much less running in 2009 compared to 2008.

My tentative events(@23 Jan 09):

01/03/09: Newton Active Run 2009 [10km]

16/08/09: AHM/Singapore Bay Run [10km/21km: TBD]

13/09/09: Mizuno Wave Run [10km]

06/12/09: SCSM 09 [10km]

Plus: 1 more run, preferably from April ~ July period.

As it stands, 4 compared to 9 events in 2008 is a major decrease. In 5 months from Aug ~ Dec 07 in my first year, I had 5 run events liao. We'll see how it goes. Recession means got to be prudent.

Banana Relay 2009

Nope, I didn't run this year. Still resting and hoping my knee muscles/ ligaments will recover as much as it can. I signed up as a volunteer. Was allocated to handle baggage deposit. Arrived by cab at 6:30am. Signed in and got my XS yellow event tee. There was a hectic period when a lot of people came to deposit bags before the race started. Only 4 of us instead of 6. Not sure how come. But it was okay. (I got to meet in person sgRunners.com webmistress who was helping with the baggage too) Asked for the bib number, write it on the card, tag the babbage with the plastic cuff and place it behind. After the race started, me, GTR, Dr Tan arrange the baggages in rows (0-93, 100-193, 200-293, 300-393, 400-433).

I didn't help much with the baggage redemption cause I shifted to help the ladies at the registration counters who were giving out goodie bags and finisher medals. I did the simple job of putting the medal into the goodie bag and handing it out. Great day. I ended the day wth helping to pack the tables and plastic chairs before going to the bus stop. I took bus 403 to Pasir Ris Interchange, changing to bus 88 to go Sengkang and finally transferring to bus 83 at Punggol Road to get home. 1 hour journey though the buss 88 from Pasir Ris interchange to Punggol Road was less than 30mins.
